Some aspirants in the forthcoming Kogi State All Progressives Congress, (APC) for National and State legislative seats are threatening to leave the ruling party should the leadership of the party still go ahead to use the purported ‘unity list’ for its primary elections, NationalWatch has learnt.
Some of the aspirants who spoke with NationalWatch warned that the party will experience mass defection if it fails to allow delegates to vote for popular candidates.
They alleged that some governor Yahaya Bello’s appointees are still insisting that the unity list must be used for the primary elections, despite the governor’s recent denial of the ploy and rejection of the unity list.
It was learnt that the governor’s appointees are still applying pressure on the leadership of the party to adopt the unity list to affirm candidates for the primary elections.
If the party adopts the unity list, the aspirants said, they will immediately dump the party. For them, the only way to participate in the primary elections is an assurance of indirect primaries by the party.
Indirect primaries involves the participation of party delegates in the selection of party candidates.
According to them, the imposition of candidates on the people does not do any good to the party other than causing crisis in the party.
They said, “We want to appeal to the party leadership in Kogi State to allow the people’s will to prevail as imposition tends to tear the party.”
