Former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, yesterday paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Maigari of Lokoja, Alhaji Dr. Muhammodu Kabir Maikarfi 111.
The former governor, while addressing the family, High Chiefs and Hakimis at the Palace of the Maigari, said that the visit was to condole with the family and entire sons and daughters of Lokoja over the demise of the foremost monarch.
According to him, the late Maigari was a forthright and very blunt person, who used to speak truth to power always.
He maintained that the monarch left a good legacy and did wonderfully well for the development of Lokoja Emirate and the Kogi state in general.
Idris described the late Maigari as a highly cultured leader who was urbane and cosmopolitan in the handling of issues, noting that his commitment to peace exemplified by his patriotic disposition to national issues was a factor that distinguished him.
He said: “The purpose of our visit this afternoon is to officially condole with the family. I want to say that the late Maigari left a good legacy and did wonderfully well for the development of not only Lokoja Emirate but Kogi State.
“I pray for Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdausi and his family the fortitude to bear the loss.
“I like Maigari because he wouldn’t hide his feelings. He spoke truth to power. So, we will miss him for those qualities.
“I want to pray that Lokoja will continue to progress and the vision the Maigari had for the Emirate will be accomplished by the grace of God.”
Earlier, the Maiyaki of Lokoja, Alhaji Ali Lawal Jiya, thanked the former governor and his entourage for the condolence visit.
He said Alhaji Ibrahim Idris is one of the favourite governors of the late monarch, adding that the visit was highly appreciated.
“We want to thank your Excellency for visiting us. You have said a lot of good things about the late Maigari and another thing I want to specially thank you for is the projects you executed during your tenure as governor of this state.
“I am sure that on the list of the late Maigari’s favourite governors, who have governed Kogi State, you are one. So, we really thank you.
The visit had in attendance, eldest son of the Maigari, Alhaji Ibrahim Gambo Kabir, Islamic clerics, led by the Chief Imam of Lokoja, the Hakimis, traditional title holders and top politicians.
