Blackout As Vandals Continue Attacks On Transformers, Cables In Lokoja

In recent times, Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State has witnessed an upsurge in the vandalisation of electric transformers and cables.

This development has thrown residents of some areas in the Lokoja metropolis into darkness for some months.

There were reported cases of transformers’ vandalism in areas such as Karaworo, Adankolo, Alheri, SUBEB, GRA; all in the Lokoja metropolis.

National Watch gathered that the vandals always operate at night and were using tricycles as means of transporting the vandalized parts of the transformers.

Sources told National Watch that the vandals usually park their tricycles beside a targeted transformer, pretending to be fixing something in it and dragged on until night time before stylishly engaging in the vandalism of the transformer.

At a community meeting in Karaworo, Lokoja, members of the community who reside elsewhere in the state capital, narrated their experiences on the activities of transformer and cable vandals to their people, urging them to ensure that adequate security is provided around the locations of the transformers in the community.

They said residents of areas where transformers and electrical cables were vandalised had to contribute as much as N1.5 million to fix the damaged transformers.

Meanwhile, this newspaper gathered that Youths in Lokoja are planning mass protest over the erratic electricity supply by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).

The youths according to sources will also protest alleged outrageous electricity bills issued by the AEDC to their communities.

One of the Youths who never wanted his name in print for security reasons, in a chat with our reporter lamented that it is sad that some communities have been subjected to long hours of darkness by the AEDC, added that the ordeal had started to affect daily lives and businesses.

While issuing warning to the AEDC to find a solution to the problem, he accused the electricity supply company of crippling their businesses and subjecting them to attacks by hoodlums, particularly in the night.

“We don’t know what we did to AEDC. They subjected us to epileptic power supply. They don’t give us light. Because of this, most of the artisans, especially those who cannot afford to buy generators, have moved out of the community,” he said.

He called on the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello and relevant authorities to urgently come to their aid.
